Zapier is the product that normalized "connect your apps without a developer" as a workflow category. Founded in 2011, it works by letting you define a Zap — a trigger in one app that fires one or more actions in others — through a straightforward point-and-click interface. With connectors for more than 6,000 services, from Gmail and Slack to niche vertical SaaS tools, Zapier can link almost any combination of software a business team uses. For many companies it remains the fastest path from "we need these two tools to talk" to a working automation in under ten minutes.

The UX is genuinely polished. Zapier handles OAuth, maps fields visually, lets you insert filters and conditional paths, and provides run history so you can see exactly what triggered and what it did. More recently the platform has moved into adjacent territory: Zapier Tables (a lightweight database), Zapier Interfaces (simple forms and portals), and AI-assisted Zap creation that builds flows from a plain-English description. These features reflect the company's push to become a broader automation platform, not just a connector layer.

The pressure point is cost. Zapier bills per task — every action executed counts against your monthly quota. Light usage on the free tier is fine, but any team running thousands of daily automations hits the math hard. There is no self-hosting path: your logic, credentials, and run history all live on Zapier's infrastructure. For organisations with data-residency requirements or workflows generating enough volume to make per-task pricing painful, that combination is what sends them looking elsewhere.
