Auth0 made adding authentication to a web or mobile app approachable at a time when the alternative was implementing OAuth 2.0 flows, session management, and brute-force protection from scratch. Its hosted Universal Login pages, SDK coverage across every major language and framework, and a marketplace of social and enterprise identity connections meant a developer could wire up production-grade login in hours rather than weeks.

Okta's 2021 acquisition didn't change the product fundamentally, but it shifted the commercial reality. Auth0's pricing is MAU-based, which sounds reasonable at small scale but compounds quickly for consumer applications with tens of thousands of active users. The B2C Essentials plan starts around $35 per month and covers 500 MAUs; moving to 10,000 MAUs pushes the bill into the hundreds. Teams that built on Auth0 early, when free tier limits were more generous, have found the cost curve increasingly uncomfortable.

There is no self-hosting path. Auth0 is a fully managed SaaS, and all authentication traffic, user records, and session tokens flow through Okta's infrastructure. That is fine for teams that prioritize convenience, but it creates a compliance barrier for organizations in regulated industries and a dependency risk for anyone who wants data residency guarantees. When either cost or control becomes a constraint, the open-source identity providers in this directory are where teams typically look first.
